Oregano is an important culinary herb, used for the flavor of its leaves, which can often be more flavourful when dried than fresh. Oregano's most prominent modern use is as the staple herb of Italian-American cuisine. It is also widely used in Turkish, Palestinian, Syrian, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish, Philippine and Latin American cuisines.
Oregano has a long history of medicinal use. Hippocrates used oregano as an antiseptic as well as a cure for stomach and respiratory ailments. A type of oregano is still used today in Greece as a palliative for sore throat.
Organic production fosters cycling of resources, promotes ecological balance, and conserves biodiversity. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Organic Program (NOP) develops, implements, and administers national production, handling, and labeling standards. Organic farming excludes or strictly limits the use of manufactured fertilizers, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides), plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food additives, and genetically modified organisms.
